GAT Food Essentials’ wowCAPS® technology is an innovative and unique microencapsulation technology for the stabilization of sensitive active ingredients. Functional ingredients – whether oils, oil suspensions, and oil or water solubles – can be microencapsulated using wowCAPS® technology and consequently easily incorporated into foods and beverages, keeping the active ingredients protected from oxidation/degradation during processing and shelf-life of the application and stable until their targeted release is desired after consumption of the product.

The technology applied is a multiple microencapsulation technology by cross linking of polymers in-situ, forming a suspension of “water-in-oil-in-water” (w/o/w) microcapsules with each phase, or both phases, (inner water phase and/or oil phase) capable of containing active ingredients. Omega-3 oils, antioxidant extracts, mineral salts, and a wide range of other ingredients can thus be incorporated, loading the appropriate phase with the active ingredient of choice. The resulting microcapsules are extremely small in size (particle size ~2µm), self-emulsifying in water and in oil, and stable in applications with a pH between 3.5 and 7.5. The shell of cross-linked polymers provides a full, targeted release at a pH below 3.0, making the microencapsulated active ingredient available to the human body after consumption of the food or beverage application.
